What kinds of balloon decoration are there?

What are chrome, pastel and foil balloons?

Foil balloons are the printed ones shaped as letters, numbers, hearts and characters; they hold their shape far longer than latex.

Why do some designs cost more?

It comes down to the number of balloons, the share of chrome and foil, the frames, rings and props, any printed boards, the helium for floating designs, and the time needed to build. An organic garland uses many more balloons than a simple arch, and takes longer, because the different sizes have to be fitted together by hand.

How long will it last?

Air-filled arches, garlands and walls keep their shape for several days indoors. Helium-filled latex balloons are at their best for about a day. Foil balloons keep going much longer.

The Lucknow Palette

Lucknow's taste leans towards grace, and some of the most admired balloon decorations here are the most restrained. Ivory and champagne with pearly chrome, echoing chikankari's white-on-white embroidery, looks beautiful in a drawing room. Blush pink with rose gold feels soft and romantic. The monsoon, from July to September, is humid, and wind and rain ruin outdoor balloon work quickly, so keep terraces covered. Winter, from November to February, is ideal, but December and January evenings bring fog and cold; room heaters placed near balloons will soften and burst them.

Looking After It

Keep ceiling fans off where helium balloons float. Keep heaters, diyas and candles well away. Don't aim coolers or AC vents at the decoration. If there are toddlers or pets, pick up burst pieces straight away. After a few days, deflate and keep the foils, burst the latex and put it in dry waste. And please never release balloons into the sky; they come down as litter in parks, the river and on the city's trees.

Before and On the Day

Book three to five days ahead for home setups, and a week or more for weekends, festivals and hall designs. The evening before, clear the wall and floor, and keep a table ready if there's a cake. The decorator calls ahead to confirm the address and access, arrives with balloons, pumps, helium, frames and props, and builds the design; a balloon room takes under an hour, an arch about two, and walls or hall setups longer. Photograph the finished decoration before guests arrive, while it's untouched and the room is still quiet.
