Haldi and mehndi decoration at home

Most families now hold the haldi and mehndi at home, on the terrace or in the building's clubhouse, and want one bright, colourful corner where the bride or groom sits and where every photo is taken. Funtook's wedding designs are built for exactly that. There are eight designs, priced from ₹8,499 to ₹13,999, each built around a cloth or grass backdrop of about 8 x 8 feet and dressed with marigolds, artificial flower arches, umbrellas, kites, paper fans, lamps, hangings and a Haldi or Mehndi board.

This page explains the designs, how to choose between them, how to plan the space for the ceremony, and what to arrange before the decorator arrives.

Haldi designs

All haldi designs use warm colours (yellow, orange, red and white) that match the turmeric and marigolds. See every design on the haldi decoration page.

  • Haldi Setup Home (₹8,499): a yellow-and-white cloth backdrop with artificial flowers and marigolds. The simplest option for a living room.
  • Haldi Ceremony Decoration (₹8,499): red, yellow and white cloth backdrop with a Haldi neon light, an artificial flower arch and a customised Haldi board.
  • Indoor Home Haldi Decoration (₹9,999): an 8 x 8 ft cloth backdrop with four umbrellas, Haldi written on the backdrop, two lamps, three paper fans and decorative hangings.
  • Simple Haldi Decoration Home (₹10,999): an 8 x 8 ft cloth backdrop with marigold flowers and two umbrellas.
  • Colorful Haldi Backdrop Decoration (₹10,999): an 8 x 8 ft backdrop with a flower arch on top, five kites, round hangings and umbrellas.

Mehndi and combined designs

Mehndi setups use greens and bright festive colours. The Indian Mehndi Decoration (₹13,999) has an 8 x 8 ft green grass backdrop with Mehndi written on it, a flower arch on top, round hangings, umbrellas and kites. See the mehndi decoration page for details.

If the haldi and mehndi are on the same day or back to back, two designs cover both: the Haldi Mehndi Decoration at Home (₹10,999), an orange 8 x 8 ft backdrop with seven umbrellas, ten small hangings and a flower arch, and the Haldi Mehndi Ring Decoration at Home (₹12,999), which pairs an 8 x 8 ft white backdrop with a 7 x 7 ft circular frame, marigolds and string lights.

Planning the space

Allow room for the backdrop and the seat

The backdrops are about 8 feet wide and 8 feet high, and the ring design adds a 7 ft frame in front. Choose a wall or a corner with at least 9 to 10 feet of width and enough ceiling height. The bride or groom usually sits on a low chowki or chair in front of the backdrop, with relatives around them, so keep five or six feet clear in front of it.

Protect the floor and furniture

Turmeric stains cloth, sofa covers and light-coloured floors. Move or cover nearby furniture, lay an old sheet or durrie under the seating area, and keep the haldi bowls on a tray. Keep the backdrop a little behind the seat so splashes don't reach it.

Outdoor and terrace functions

On a terrace or lawn, wind is the main problem: umbrellas, kites and hangings can swing, and a cloth backdrop needs a wall or railing to fix against. Tell us the venue in the booking notes. If the function is in the afternoon sun, set up in a shaded corner so the guests and the decoration both stay comfortable.

Clubhouses and halls

If you've booked a clubhouse, check that outside decoration is allowed and that your booking starts early enough for the setup. Share the manager's contact with us.

Colour and style

  • Traditional haldi: yellow and white with marigolds, the look most families expect.
  • Bright and playful: orange with umbrellas, kites and hangings, which suits a younger crowd and lots of dancing.
  • Evening functions: choose a design with a neon sign or string lights so the backdrop still shows up after sunset.
  • Mehndi: green grass backdrops set off the bride's outfit and the mehndi patterns in close-up photos.

A checklist for the day before

  • Confirm the exact spot for the backdrop and clear it of furniture, pictures and wall hangings.
  • Decide who will receive the decorator and show them the space, and share that person's phone number with us.
  • Keep a ladder or tall stool, an extension board for lights and some old sheets for the floor ready.
  • Arrange the chowki or chair for the bride or groom, and the haldi or mehndi trays, so the decorator can build around them.
  • If the function is outdoors, have a backup indoor spot in case of rain or strong wind.
  • Tell the photographer when the setup will be ready, so the first photos are taken while the flowers look freshest.

Haldi or mehndi for the groom's side

Many grooms' families now hold their own haldi at home. The same designs work for both sides; the difference is usually the board text and the colours. A yellow-and-white backdrop suits either, and a customised Haldi board can carry the groom's name. If both families are holding functions on the same day in the same city, book two separate slots so each setup has its own decorator.

When to book

Wedding dates are fixed well in advance, and auspicious dates in the wedding season are busy for decorators. Book as soon as the function date and venue are confirmed. Designs with a customised board need the names and the date to be shared at booking.

Cities we cover

Booking, payment and on the day

Choose a design, select your city, date and one-hour time slot (8 AM to midnight), and pay a 30% advance or the full amount online. We don't offer cash on delivery. You can cancel within 24 hours of placing the order for a full refund; after that a cancellation fee may apply, and customised boards are non-refundable. See the cancellation policy for details.

On the day, have someone at the venue at the start of the slot (the decorator waits up to 30 minutes), keep a ladder available for fixing the backdrop, and keep a power socket free if the design has a neon sign or lights. Backdrops, frames, umbrellas and other props are provided for the event and collected afterwards. Tell us within two hours of the setup if anything needs attention. Product photos show the finished design; the real setup can vary slightly with the venue and material availability.

Other celebrations around the wedding

For the couple's first anniversary, see anniversary decoration. A car boot surprise or a balloon bouquet with roses makes a good gift for the couple. For engagement ideas, read our post on engagement balloon decoration.

Funtook has more than five years of experience and over 5,000 clients. See finished setups on our recent work page, or contact us with questions about your venue before booking.
