A Lucknow wedding is a season, not a day. The baraat, the nikah or the pheras and the reception happen on a marriage lawn on Faizabad Road or in a banquet hall in Gomti Nagar, but the days before belong to the family home. In Hindu households there's the haldi, the mehndi and the tilak; in Muslim households, the Manjha, when the bride is dressed in yellow and anointed with turmeric paste, followed by the mehndi and the Sanchaq, when the groom's family arrives with gifts for the bride. These are the functions where the dholak comes out, the aunts sing, the teasing starts and every cousin crowds into the photographs. Funtook's wedding function decoration in Lucknow is built for them.
Our function designs run from ₹8,499 to ₹13,999. Each comes with a styled backdrop, a decorated seat where the bride or groom sits for the rituals, and marigolds, drapes and balloons, itemised on the design page. Choose one, fix the time, and the setup will be waiting when the relatives start arriving.
Haldi and Manjha. Turmeric ceremonies need a cheerful backdrop, a low, sturdy seat and a well-protected floor. Two designs at ₹8,499, the Haldi Ceremony Decoration and the Haldi Setup Home, are the most popular for courtyards and terraces. For a covered space or a flat, the Indoor Home Haldi Decoration (₹9,999) is designed for indoors, and the Simple Haldi Decoration Home (₹10,999) adds more flowers and drapes. See all haldi decors.
Mehndi night. Lucknow's mehndi evenings are long and musical, with the bride seated for hours while the artist works and the women of the family sing. The ₹13,999 Indian Mehndi Decoration is our most complete mehndi design; browse mehndi decors for more.
Both on one day. When the turmeric ceremony is in the morning and the mehndi at night, a single setup saves time and money: the Haldi Mehndi Decoration at Home (₹10,999) or the Haldi Mehndi Ring Decoration at Home (₹12,999).
A festive photo wall. For a sangeet, a tilak evening or a family dinner during the wedding week, the Colorful Haldi Backdrop Decoration (₹10,999) creates a bright corner for photographs.

Hindu weddings in Lucknow follow the lagan dates set by the family pandit, clustering in the auspicious stretches from roughly November to early December, mid-January to March, and April to June, while avoiding the kharmas months and the Chaturmas period from about July to early November. Muslim weddings follow the Islamic calendar, and families generally avoid Muharram and the month of Ramzan, which means the weeks after Eid can be especially busy. Christian and Sikh families have their own preferences. The result is that certain weeks see hundreds of weddings across the city at once, and marriage lawns, caterers, tent houses and decorators all fill up together. Book the home functions as soon as the date is fixed, ideally the same week.
The old city's family homes, around Chowk, Aminabad, Nakhas and Victoria Street, often have beautiful inner courtyards, perfect for a Manjha or haldi, though the lanes are narrow and our team may need to carry materials in by hand; share the nearest point a vehicle can reach. Independent houses in Indira Nagar, Mahanagar, Aliganj, Gomti Nagar and Rajajipuram usually have a terrace or a large drawing room. Flats in Gomti Nagar Extension, Jankipuram, Sushant Golf City and Vrindavan Yojana suit the indoor design, or the society's terrace or clubhouse with permission. Many families also book a small banquet room or lawn for the mehndi night; confirm the setup time and decoration rules with the venue.
Winter weddings bring Lucknow's famous fog. On many December and January mornings, the city is wrapped in mist until ten or eleven, and it's cold. For a winter haldi or Manjha, start later in the morning, once the sun has broken through, and choose a sunny courtyard or terrace, or go indoors. Keep warm water ready for washing off the turmeric, shawls for elders and hot chai for everyone. Summer weddings, in April, May and June, face the opposite problem: temperatures that can pass 44°C and the afternoon loo. Hold summer turmeric ceremonies early, by 8 or 9 am, or indoors, and aim fans and coolers at the guests rather than the flowers. Pre-monsoon storms can arrive suddenly in May and June, so ask your tent house for a shamiana as a backup.
Old Lucknow homes often have marble or mosaic floors and heirloom furniture, both of which turmeric stains easily. Move carpets, cushions and good furniture out of the area the evening before. Lay plastic sheeting under a durrie or old bedsheet in a wide circle around the seat. The backdrop goes a few feet behind the bride or groom so it isn't splashed before the photographs. Keep buckets, mugs and towels ready, and wash floors soon after the function. Ask guests to wear yellow, or at least something they don't mind staining; a delicate chikan kurta is best saved for the mehndi night.
For a Manjha, the bride sits in yellow while married women apply the paste, usually with songs; seat her on a low, stable chair or a decorated takht, and leave space around her for the women. For a Hindu haldi, the same applies, sometimes with a short puja first. For the tilak, when the bride's family visits the groom's home, the setting needs room for the gifts and a seat of honour for the groom. For the mehndi, the artist needs bright, even light and a comfortable seat beside the bride, and the singers need a spot on mattresses with bolsters facing her. Tell us about your family's functions in the order notes, including the timings.
Marigold orange, yellow and green are the classic turmeric palette. For a Manjha, yellow dominates, often with white and a little green. Mehndi evenings suit deep green with hot pink or magenta, or emerald with gold. Many Lucknow families also love a softer, refined look for the mehndi, ivory and gold with blush accents, which echoes the city's chikankari and looks elegant with pastel lehengas and shararas. If the whole family will be in one colour, choose a backdrop with enough contrast that people stand out in photographs rather than blending into the flowers behind them.
In a Lucknowi home, the music and the food are as much a part of the function as the ritual. Decide early where the dholak and the singers will sit, perhaps a durrie with gao-takiye along one wall facing the bride, and where the speaker or DJ will plug in, so wires stay out of the pictures. The tea and snacks, and later the dinner, can go on the far side of the courtyard or in another room; that way, the photographer isn't dodging waiters and plates. Get these three zones settled, and the backdrop becomes the calm centre of a very lively room.
Clear and cover the courtyard or room the night before, and work out where the decorator's vehicle can stop, which in the old city may be at the end of the lane. We arrive about three hours before the function is due to start. While we work, it helps to have one cousin or uncle on hand who knows the plan. Once the setup is finished, take the photographs of the bride or groom on the fresh seat before anyone picks up a bowl of haldi. When it's all over, turmeric-soaked marigolds and cloth are usually thrown away; if you'd like anything set aside for an evening function, mention it when booking.
Two functions deserve special mention in Lucknow. In many Lucknowi Muslim weddings, the Sanchaq sees the groom's family arrive at the bride's home with trays of gifts, clothes, jewellery and sweets for the bride, often a day or two before the nikah. The trays are displayed, relatives admire them, and there's plenty of food and conversation. A graceful backdrop and a well-lit display area for the trays make the gathering look as special as it feels. In Hindu weddings, the tilak, when the bride's family visits the groom's home with gifts and applies the tilak to the groom, calls for a seat of honour and space for the visiting family. For both, the fuller haldi designs or the colourful backdrop work well; tell us which function it is.
With the lawn, the caterer and the jewellery taking most of a Lucknow wedding budget, the home functions often get whatever is left. A little planning helps. Spend where the camera will be: the Manjha or haldi for most families, the mehndi night for others. A combined haldi-and-mehndi design lets one setup serve two functions. And a well-lit, uncluttered backdrop in a courtyard often photographs better than an elaborate one squeezed into a small room.
Pre-wedding functions produce the most joyful photographs of the whole wedding, if a few moments are planned. Photograph the bride or groom alone on the decorated seat before any turmeric is applied, and again at the end, happily yellow. Capture the grandmother or eldest aunt applying the first stroke; keep a chair beside the seat for her. Gather all the cousins for a group shot straight after the main ritual. At the mehndi, ask for close-ups of the finished design against the flowers, and a wide shot from a staircase or balcony showing the whole courtyard. At a Sanchaq, a photograph of the gift trays laid out in front of the backdrop is one families love to keep. Share the design with the photographer in advance so they can plan their angles.
Lucknow weddings draw relatives from Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Barabanki, Sitapur and further, and many arrive on the morning of a function. Build in a little slack: functions often start later than the card says, so a setup that's ready early is never wasted. Keep a room or a relative's house nearby where travellers can freshen up and change, and seat elders near the ritual rather than at the back, where they can see and be seen.
Our catalogue doesn't list a separate wedding-night design. Couples usually book a romantic room from anniversary decoration in Lucknow, such as the Romantic Love Decoration at Home or Hotel Room, which suits both a bedroom and a hotel suite. Flower decoration for the bridal car isn't listed online; please call us to talk it through. For a playful surprise later in the week, see car boot decoration in Lucknow.
Once the wedding is behind them, couples often come back a year later for their first anniversary, and in time for a godh bharai and a newborn welcome or aqiqah. For smaller gatherings during the wedding week, balloon decoration in Lucknow costs far less than a full function setup, and our article on engagement balloon decoration has ideas for a ring ceremony. Everything we offer here is on the Funtook Lucknow page, with real setups on our recent work page.
