Say your grandfather turns seventy in Marwari Patti

Your grandfather still reads Phanishwar Nath Renu, the Hindi writer born in a village of this district, and he turns seventy on a winter Sunday. The family takes him to the Kali Mandir in the morning, and the decorator arrives for an 11 AM slot while the house is empty. When he walks back in, the front room has a gold and maroon balloon wall and a small table set aside for the cake your aunt baked. He sits down, pretends to complain about the fuss, and asks someone to read him a page of Maila Anchal.

Birthday planning tips for Araria

• Chhath keeps many Araria families busy at sunrise and sunset, with arghya at the water. If a birthday lands in Chhath week, a midday slot avoids the clash.
• Winter evenings in north Bihar turn cold quickly. Keep a December or January party in the drawing room rather than on the roof.
• Joint-family homes in older mohallas like Rahika Tola often have one big front room. Tell the decorator which wall faces the door, so the backdrop is the first thing the birthday person sees.
• Pick up the cake before the slot starts. The decorator brings the decoration, not the food.

What is included

The balloons, backdrop and props listed on the design, plus setup at the address you give. Anything not on that list, such as cake, candles or snacks, stays with you.
