Picture a fiftieth birthday in Madhubani

Say your father turns fifty in March and the whole family is home in Madhubani that evening. Your mother takes him to the old Durga temple in the mohalla for the evening aarti, and the decorator works in your 6 PM slot while they are out. When he walks back in, the drawing room has a gold and white balloon wall, balloons hanging from the ceiling and a table waiting for the cake you picked up on the way. All that is left is to switch off the fan before he blows out the candles.

Birthday planning tips for Purnia homes

• Purnia gets more rain than any other part of Bihar, and the air stays heavy from June to September. In those months keep the party indoors and the room cool, so the balloons hold their shape.
• In October the lanes around Bhatta Bazar fill with Durga Puja crowds. If the birthday falls in the puja days, a morning or late-night slot is easier for the decorator and your guests.
• Give a landmark everyone in the city knows, such as RN Saw Chowk, Line Bazar Chowk or Zila School, along with your lane name.
• Want birthday decoration party ideas for a terrace? Pick a premium design with a backdrop, and keep a tarpaulin handy in case the sky turns.

What is included

The balloons, backdrop and props listed on the design you pick, and the setup at your place. The cake, snacks and venue stay with you unless that design's page says otherwise.
