Say the cousins are driving down NH 27 from Siliguri

Picture your father's sixtieth birthday at your house in Purab Pali, with relatives coming in by car from Siliguri along NH 27. You do not know exactly when they will cross Dalkhola, so you book a 4 PM slot and keep the evening free. The decorator puts up a silver and blue balloon arch at the gate and a balloon wall in the courtyard. When the cars pull in, the photos start before anyone has had tea.

Balloon tips for Kishanganj houses

• Kishanganj gets close to 2,000 mm of rain a year, more than 400 mm of it in July alone. Plan monsoon setups indoors, under a roof or a verandah.
• After heavy rain, water has been reported standing at Paschim Pali Chowk and on the road from Dharamganj Chowk to the station. If you live near either, give the decorator a dry route.
• Use the landmarks everyone in town knows, such as Gandhi Chowk, Caltex Chowk, the Sadar Hospital on Hospital Road or the railway station.
• Guests coming from Siliguri or Purnia on NH 27 can be late. Book the slot a little earlier than the party, not at the minute they are due.

What is included
