Picture a birthday when the tea garden shift ends

Say your husband works at a tea garden out in Pothia block, Bihar's tea country, and is home in Uttar Pali only on Sundays. His birthday falls midweek, so the family moves it to Sunday and you book a 6 PM slot. He gets back a little after seven to a room surprise in the bedroom, with balloons on the ceiling and a happy birthday banner over the bed. The children have hidden behind the door for ten minutes, which for them is a very long time.

Birthday tips for Kishanganj homes

• April is the hottest month here, with afternoons near 35°C. Book an evening slot for a summer birthday and keep the fan off the balloons until guests arrive.
• January nights in Kishanganj drop close to 10°C. A winter party is warmer and the balloons last longer in a closed room.
• Kishanganj homes mix Hindi, Urdu, Surjapuri and Bengali. If a grandparent will read the banner, check the design's wording before you book.
• Waterlogging has been reported on Hospital Road and near Rui Dhasa Mission Road after heavy rain. Share a second, drier landmark if you live close by.
