Delhi and its cars have a long love affair. The city spends evenings in them, crawling home on the Outer Ring Road, driving past India Gate after dinner, heading out to a farmhouse party or a late-night paratha stop. So it's no surprise that the car boot has become one of Delhi's favourite places for a surprise. Your partner lifts the dikki expecting shopping bags and instead finds it glowing, packed with balloons, their name spelt out on a banner.
Funtook's car boot decoration in Delhi costs ₹1,499 to ₹2,499. Our decorator comes to where the car is parked, whether that's a society basement in Dwarka, the stilt parking of a builder floor in Janakpuri or a kothi driveway in Greater Kailash, and leaves the boot ready for the moment. Each design page shows exactly what goes inside.
For a birthday, the Car Boot Decoration for Birthday (₹1,999) or the fuller Car Decoration for Birthday (₹2,299). For an anniversary or Karwa Chauth, the Anniversary Car Boot Decoration (₹1,999) or the Surprising Love Car Decor (₹1,599). For a proposal, the Marry Me Car Boot Decoration (₹1,999). For bringing a baby girl home, the Welcome Baby Girl Car Decors (₹1,999). On a budget, the Classic Car Boot Decoration (₹1,499). For the biggest reveal, the Surprise Car Boot Decoration (₹2,499) or the Balloon Decoration in Car (₹2,299).

Builder floors. In Janakpuri, Rajouri Garden, Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar and much of South and West Delhi, cars live in stilt parking or on the street outside. Stilt parking is fine, as long as the other families don't need to get their cars out for an hour. Street parking is harder: choose a quiet time, and park where the open boot won't face traffic.
Societies. In Dwarka, Vasant Kunj, Mayur Vihar and Patparganj, basement or covered parking is ideal. Register the decorator at the gate and share the slot number.
Kothis and farmhouses. A private driveway in Greater Kailash, Defence Colony or Vasant Vihar, or a farmhouse lawn in Chhatarpur, gives all the privacy and space you need.
Wherever it is, someone trustworthy has to hold the key for about an hour.
Delhi has many beautiful places, but not all of them allow you to stop, and some areas around monuments and government buildings are closely watched. Choose designated, legal parking and a spot where you can stand behind the car safely. Good options include the parking areas near Sunder Nursery or Lodhi Garden before an evening walk, a restaurant's car park in Hauz Khas, Khan Market or Connaught Place before dinner, a farmhouse driveway before a party, or simply your own porch or society parking, which is the most private and relaxed of all. Never stop on the Ring Road, a flyover, an expressway or next to moving traffic; a surprise is never worth a risk to anyone's safety.
A car boot surprise for someone arriving at IGI Airport, whether a spouse back from a posting or a child home from studying abroad, is a Delhi classic. Airport parking is controlled and time-limited, so decorate at home and drive over. The drive to Terminal 3 can be long from East or North Delhi, so choose a foil-heavy design, keep the AC on in summer, and let your guest discover the surprise when they load their suitcase. The same approach works for New Delhi Railway Station and Hazrat Nizamuddin, where parking is tighter still.
Karwa Chauth is a lovely night for a car boot surprise in Delhi: red and gold balloons loaded into the boot during the afternoon, and a reveal once the moon is up and the fast has been broken. Valentine's Day, midnight birthdays and New Year's Eve work just as well. Book several days ahead for these evenings, as they're among the busiest of the whole year for us in Delhi.
From late April to June, a car parked in the Delhi sun becomes an oven, and latex balloons burst within minutes; decorate in the shade and reveal after sunset. The monsoon brings sudden downpours, so choose a covered spot. From November to February, the cold keeps balloons firm and early darkness makes fairy lights glow, but fog can be thick at night; keep the drive short and on familiar roads, and consider revealing at home. On poor air-quality days, keep the reveal brief and the windows up.
The Karwa Chauth drive. A husband in Rajouri Garden has the boot decorated in the stilt parking while his wife is at her mother's for the evening puja. After the moon is sighted and the fast is broken, he offers to drive her home, and asks her to put the thali in the back.
The student home from abroad. A daughter lands at Terminal 3 after two years in Canada. Her brother has decorated the family car in their Dwarka society basement with a "Welcome Home" banner, and the whole family is filming when she lifts the boot for her suitcase.
The friends' midnight surprise. College friends in North Campus decorate one car at a friend's house in Model Town, park outside the dhaba where they're meeting, and send the birthday boy out at midnight to "fetch the cake from the boot".
The person being surprised has the only key. The car sits in the afternoon sun before the reveal. The setup happens in the morning for a reveal at midnight. The guard wasn't told, or the other families in the builder floor need to get their cars out. And the planner opens the boot themselves. Avoid those, and the rest is easy.
Turn on the fairy lights five minutes before, switch off the car's interior light and park away from harsh streetlights so the boot's glow fills the frame. The person filming should stand to one side at shoulder height, already recording. Afterwards, take a calm photo of the two of you sitting on the edge of the boot with the balloons behind you; it's often the picture that ends up framed on the wall. Shoot in portrait for Instagram and WhatsApp, landscape if you want to watch it on the TV later.
A car boot surprise is one of the most affordable ways to create a big moment in Delhi, leaving room for dinner at a favourite restaurant, a cake from a bakery you both love, and perhaps flowers in the boot. If you'd rather spend it all on the surprise, the fullest ₹2,499 design in an SUV makes a spectacular reveal on its own.
In a joint family or a small builder-floor flat, private surprises are hard to arrange; there's always a relative home, and the bedroom is rarely truly private. The car is one of the few spaces a couple has to themselves. It's also portable: the reveal can happen outside a restaurant, in a farmhouse driveway, in the society basement or at the airport, wherever feels right. And because the boot is enclosed, the fairy lights make a warm little world that looks wonderful on camera, especially on a cold winter night.
Delhi colonies are crowded, and parking disputes are legendary. If the decoration happens in shared stilt parking or on the street, tell the neighbours who share the space, keep the setup to your own spot, and don't block anyone's gate or car. A friendly word beforehand and a few sweets afterwards go a long way towards keeping the peace. In societies, follow the rules on basement use, and let the guard know the decorator's name and your slot number in advance.
Red and gold for Karwa Chauth and anniversaries; pink and white for a baby girl coming home; black, gold and silver for a milestone birthday or New Year's Eve; red, green and white at Christmas; and, for a first Lohri, fiery orange and gold. Tell us the occasion so the banner and the colours match the moment perfectly.
Evening traffic in Delhi can wreck a carefully timed surprise. The stretches around Dhaula Kuan, AIIMS, Ashram, ITO, Moolchand and the Outer Ring Road through Rohini and Pitampura are notorious between six and nine. If the reveal involves a drive across the city, plan the route around them, add plenty of buffer, and remember that a decorated boot doesn't enjoy an hour of stop-start driving. Where possible, keep the reveal on your own side of the city, or do it at home. On weekend evenings, reveals just after sunset are usually calmer than later ones.
For a proposal, the Marry Me design says it all. Keep the rest simple: a quiet, safe spot, a glowing boot, a ring in the pocket, and a friend filming discreetly from a distance. Avoid busy public places where a crowd may gather; your own society parking or a friend's farmhouse driveway gives you privacy for the most important question of your life. Choose an evening after sunset, so the lights do their magic.
Delhi loves SUVs, and a Fortuner, XUV700, Scorpio, Creta or Innova, with the rear seats folded, carries the fullest designs with room to spare for a cake and a bouquet of flowers. A sedan's long boot frames any design tidily, and a hatchback is best with the essentials or simple options. Note the model in the order so the decorator packs accordingly.
Decide where the lid will lift, then make sure the car doesn't have far to travel to get there. Arrange the key. Clear the boot the night before, including the parcel shelf and any loose tools. Book a slot that ends at least half an hour before you leave, and check the banner before the decorator goes. Prepare your line, perhaps "Can you get my jacket from the dikki?" in winter, and have a friend filming from the side before the lid lifts.
Printed photographs clipped inside the lid; a small cake or a box of their favourite mithai set in the middle at the last minute; a message in Hindi, Punjabi or English; a song queued on the car speakers. For a proposal, keep the ring in your pocket. Our post on surprise birthday car boot decoration has more ideas.
Drive slowly over Delhi's speed breakers and potholes, keep the cabin comfortable, and clear every balloon from the boot before driving normally again. Ask us how the lights in your design are powered; nothing should be wired into the car's electrics. The decorator usually finishes within an hour; afterwards, keep the foils and banner and put popped latex in dry waste.
For a surprise waiting at home, add a room surprise from birthday decoration in Delhi, or a romantic setup from anniversary decoration in Delhi. If the surprise is for someone across town, a balloon bouquet in Delhi can go to their door; for a baby's homecoming, newborn welcome decoration in Delhi.
